The show was a meteoric success and spawned a spiritual successor (pun fully intended) in the form of The Legend of Korra, which followed the adventures of the new avatar following Aang. The continuity effect on Avatar: The Last Airbender created a world with dynamic characters that would live through an experience and come out on the other side/next episode as a changed person, and potentially having different viewpoints on the world. Personally, nothing was more heartbreaking than the episode where Appa got kidnapped in the desert and left audiences wondering just how this would all get resolved. Waiting between seasons was absolutely excruciating. It was one of the first long form continuity series that Nickelodeon produced and it was truly innovative to see the story unfold over the course of years.
